Default Printer Setting Windows 10

Several users report their computers updated to Windows 10 overnight, while others simply updated to the new OS themselves, or bought replacement machines with Win10 already loaded. Whatever the situation, there is a default setting that affects printers.

Symptom

The user will report their invoices, POs, quotes, etc. are printing in a narrow strip on one side of the page. Usually they will also report that they printed tags just prior to printing other reports.

Cause

Let Windows manage my default printer is set to On

Fix

Set Let Windows manage my default printer to Off

Go down to the Start Button and start typing printer. As the image shows, you have more than one option. Choose the one with the gear icon that reads, Printers & scanners.

  • On the left side of the screen, select Printers & scanners
  • Click the toggle switch under Let Windows manage my default printer to Off
  • Make sure the proper printer is set as the default
